That top pic is amazing. I didn't know Barbie could swim.

Love the bottom pics. Very creative jetty. Do you know where?

"Stuck in a perpetual state of decay on the French shore at Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, the massive metal sculpture entitled, Serpent D'Océan is a terrifying vision with an environmental message.

The skeletal serpent was unveiled in 2012 as part of the Estuaire art exhibition which invites international artists to create large-scale works using the environment surrounding the Loire River between Nantes to Saint-Nazaire. The work was created by Chinese-French artist Huang Yong Ping, who used the rough iconography of China's mythological dragons to design the over 400 foot long art monster. The beast is posed in slithering movement despite being nothing more than bones, giving the dull metal frame an unsettlingly life-like quality."

To the extent that sinuous and sensuous are the same, that doesn't look so bad. Does it bite?

From the linked article: "The sea snakes are "incredibly venomous," Heal the Bay announced on its Facebook page, and people are urged to stay away, but there's "no need to panic.""

it does sound oxymoronic . actually that little guy is far from home. think of how whales or dolphins beach themselves when sick or dying. the snake on the beach wasn't "hunting", he was almost dead and unlikely to attack anything. thank El Nino

I didn't see it as oxymoronic - even such a half-dead poor thing could probably summon up the strength for a last feeble (but deadly) strike at a child, dog or idiot who tried to pick it up, or maybe even just got too close.

No, it won't bite, if you smoke a cigarette , that old man said.

They are still lucky to roam around your shores and not in Vietnam where some ended up in tonic drink, others as snacks.

I've been a year round body-surfer since the early 70's. occasionally a white shark is spotted but they're more of a Monterey Santa Cruz thing. I see blue sharks when I go fishing offshore. I had never heard of a Hammerhead in So Cal waters until this year. a couple of them have attacked/nipped at kayakshttp://cdn.theguardian.tv/mainwebsite/2015/09/23/150923Shark_FromGAus-16x9.mp4

Here in Florida, it is not uncommon to see a medium sized or larger shark not far from swimmers at the beach. If it is one of the larger sharks, it is not uncommon for it to be a hammerhead.

What is very uncommon is a hammerhead attacking a human. While they are seen close to swimmers, can get pretty big, and look like something made up for a horror film, the threat is minimal. For similar conditions, bull sharks are a far larger threat.

I don't remember any hammer head shark attacks locally, even non fatal. There was a fatal bull shark attack locally not that long ago, in intercoastal waters. The guy was doing something in the water just off the dock and a bull shark killed him with his wife seeing thr whole thing only a few feet away (on the dock).

There are something like less than 50 reported hammerhead attacks on people reported....not last year or in the US, just known. None of those AFAIAA have been fatal.

Don't let their looks intimidate you.

Re: Bodysurfing…Grew up in Hawaii, and bodysurfed since I could walk er, swim….Do some up here in Ventura..Water is 71-74 still, and getting in the water 3 times a week to take advantage of it…Heard about that kayaker, down by County Line…Another one up in Goleta or Gaviota area--I guess he was lucky as a squidder came and rescued him. Crazy year, like 97-98 when we saw mahi mahi in the Monterey area. When my boat gets finished, I hope to be out in the middle of the action again, if it persists through winter..Fingers crossed

Some friends went out on one of the Sport boats a week ago, and ran into schools of Bluefin, Yellowfin, and Yellow tail at the Osborne bank--They lost 50 fish ( Altho they boated limits on all species), due to size….Especially the big yellowtail, one that spooled my friend on 40 lb line , with a two speed reel…Said there was no way he could stop it…Has no idea of how big it was..Yahooo!

About the El Nino period of '82- '83---Saw one or more off San Miguel Island, but it was so cool, never even thought of baiting it, although we had the gear (commercial rock codding at that time.)
