Creating Datasheets

10/23/2015 4:34 AM

I can find datasheet most of time what I search from Google or datasheet archive websites. My problem is with creating datasheets. My company launches 200-250 products in every year and most of them similar to each other. Each time, I write technic specs and other information by copy-paste from other similar product's datasheet but new images, new translation in different language for new market is so bored and taking time. Also, when marketing department can't find the latest version of TDS in server, they call R&D. I wonder how is this process in your company? Is there anyone use any document management program?

You will need something like a Product Data Management software.

In short PDM.

Are you seriously writing datasheets by hand?

Let the community know where you work. Show the thread to your manager and get a pay rise by pointing out a sub standard condition.

IdeaSmith is right. Writing by hand is waste of time. You can use a PDM software but if your manager is stingy, you can try web based applications, I think they are cheaper than desktop application or licensed software. I read a new application from different forum, its name is TDSmaker. It is in BETA, so it is free. I didn't try yet, because we use an PLM software and also PDM module. But you may try. I think your boss can like it :)

I tried this app, it really seems good! They requested an example from my company TDS and my company TDS template had designed and added my account 1 day later. And also 1 TDS example in 3 language was sent by E-mail and added my account.

You could set up a database using MS Access or something similar. It would not be that difficult to generate a report that could serve as a datasheet. You could then export the report as a PDF and then upload them to your website...

Spend some money and buy translator software.

Being brutal, a company should not be producing lots of similar products when it could produce a lesser number of products in greater number with less problems of documentation and repair, recall etc.

You can find yourself with hundreds of documents with no way of identifying their differences. So you could design the same product twice. Unless you have a consistent system in sales & engineering for naming different features, a document search system is not going to find an existing product similar to the latest demand.

One way of coping is to have a large drawing or database sheet with tables of features across and modification numbers down. You can see for what you already have a design quickly.

A product then becomes drawing xxxx mod yyy

It is time your sales looked at what they are doing and the engineering design costs - instead of dumping all the work on you (your costs do not appear on the sales dept budget) and blaming engineering for the selling price effects.
