277 volt ballast on 220V ????????????

07/23/2007 8:39 PM

Some of my friends said they have operated the 277 volt 2 lamp 8' ballast on 220 volts and it worked..??

I just wondered if anyone knew for sure if this would work?

Donald

It will work but it greatly reduces the life of the ballast plus the increased current draw will overheat the conductors.

Will work all right, but give you the problems described in post #1. In addition, I remember the ballast making louder than usual noise. (60 Hz hum)

why would it hum ? why would it over heat the conductors, are you thinking the branch circuit or switch loop conductors? perry

Maybe this is why:

T8 electronic ballasts for T8 lamps are what make it possible to start the lamp and maintain lighting. These come in universal voltage of 120 & 277 volt, you don't need to know your voltage, the ballast knows and feed it accordingly. These operate T8 lamps whether they be F17T8, F25T8, F32T8, F40T8 linear, FBO31T8, FBO24T8 and FBO16T8 u-shape types.

You need to check the individual ballast. I am looking at an Universal brand electronic ballast and the input voltage is 120 to 277 vac. Some of my older electronic ballasts are rated for just 120 vac.

Sounds reasonable, and I haven't checked out the exact ballast, but, I'm sure that it's not the new type of voltage sensing ballast, or he wouldn't be getting them for free..

Thanks guys for all your input, I REALLY love this site, and I know that a LOT of free information is shared, but hey, it makes me feel good to help people, and I know I also appreciate help from others when I need it.
