Nervous Time

11/01/2015 11:15 AM

shakers are part of the deal if you live in Calif. over time you learn a few things. understanding them isn't a perfect science but one thing that many will tell you is the ground "can" get irritated with smaller shakes in advance of a major jolt.there isn't surefire linkage here but when a cluster of smaller shakers start showing up I look at this the same way storm watchers get uptight when the sky darkens.

This could mean that Oklahoma is about to explode and take parts of Texas, Arkansas and Missouri with it!

There's two different thoughts on "clusters of earth quakes", 1) being it could be a precursor to a major event and 2) clusters in the lower magnitude relieves built up pressures along the fault lines.

It seems like it's one of Mother Nature's secrets she isn't going to give up easily when it comes to predicting earth quakes. You can try and build structures to with-stand major shaking, but ...... until it's built and in place and goes through a major event, we don't actually know how well it's going stand up to the forces. As I said in your "6th St. Bridge" thread, earth quakes don't really bother me, but at the same time, I try not to tempt my fate, like crossing the (P.O.S.) Oakland Bay Bridge. I've been through some pretty good earth quakes here in Northern Calif., but the worst one I experienced was only a 3.0 while I was working in HVAC. I was stuck 8 feet up on top of the turbine control booth on the 6th floor of #22 power plant at the Geysers Project repairing the AC unit, when hit. All I could hear was the turbines bouncing on the vibration pads while it was spooling down and in the back of my mind was the signage on every floor going up to the booth, "Know Your Exits- Rupture Diaphragm Can Burst At Anytime" That event shut down 5 units at the same time, (and no, I did not use the ladder to climb off the roof of the control booth!!)

The bottom line is, we choose to live where we do and we're all going to die at some point time, no matter where your at or what your doing- when your time is up ......it's up. Just try not to tempt fate

I was in Santa Rosa for that one. A lady got off the bus in front of our electronics repair shop and we asked her if she felt the quake. She looked up and put her hands on her head and said," I thought I was just feeling the effect of a long day!"

All the power lines were swingin, and we were prayin the equipment didn't fall off the racks.

What year were you talking about? It was '80 when I went for the ride at the geyser's project. The geysers still rock everyday with an average 2.0 magnitude.

The Santa Rosa area has had their fair share of earthquakes to the point that I don't feel them unless they're greater than 3.0. The worst one I rode out was in '69 that was initially reported as 6.0 which leveled down town. What was strange was about 2 hours before the first quake hit, my 3 horses broke out taking 10 of our calves with them

I do believe animals can sense pending earthquakes and we should spend more time and effort studying this phenomenon

A small quake might just be relieving the stress at one point only to pass it on to another point, and this other location might be just close to the breaking point. A large quake I experienced in Alaska (a Richter 7.7) was preceded by a number of small tremors in the preceding hours as well as more smaller quakes afterward.

But sometimes small quakes are just small quakes, and only 20-20 hindsight can tell the difference.

This is just the beginning, as Planet X gets closer it is going to get real messy down here.
