When I was a Junior, I did a design project on a gearless limited-slip differential to be used in RC cars. That was fun, especially the testing.

For which specific field you're doing the project for?

Any special interest?

just my $0.02, why not you tried to observe on everyday life activities and see if there is anything complaint in day to day activities that you might want to improve from? sometimes it doen't need to be very big changes. for example maybe you can try on inventing a toilet seat lifter that lift up toilet seat automatically without touching it and lower down when 'required'. or the seat can be adjusted to meet a butt size of small children to a big fat ass. Well just some thought when I am shitting. hehe

Try developing a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) based skid for its Combined Heat and Power (CHP) uses by individual home owners to replace the traditional heating and power requirements. The outline is provided for you, here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chtank/homepower.html.

The skid would have solar cells mounted on top of a weathered in (well ventilated) skid which is equipped with water hydrolysis hydrogen generator so supply hydrogen to enrich natural gas, propane, or syn-gas that supplies a tubular solid oxide fuel cell for generation of electrical power and heat for the home. The heat can also be used as process heat for syn-gas or for driving a heat engine to generate additional electrical power. Also, the condensate from the fuel cell exhaust is pure water, safe for drinking - the astronauts use it on the space shuttle and SST.

For you project, this would be idea as it would require you to develop a process flow sheet, mechanical flow sheet(s), do a hazards analysis, and make complete detailed skid layout and design that includes materials list and cost analysis. All the same stuff you will need to know when you enter the workforce when you graduate. I also discuss this on my blog, http://chtank.blogspot.com/

I am a retired "principle mechanical designer", retiring in 1998 from Parson's Engineering Corporation, Power and Petrochemical Division (aka SIP). My principle duties and experience included the design of power plants, offshore and on shore petroleum gathering, treating, and refining plants, and chemical plants for plastics resins. I would love you have you take on this project. I am sure you would find the work most gratifying and would be a most useful item to include on your resume.

To supplement your studies, my I suggest you look at some of the self study courses provided by MIT Open Course Ware, too. This is free for home study but to receive credit you must enroll with MIT. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

How about a pump and filter demonstration. Get a small pump, a small backflushing filter and a tank. Put a seperator in the tank to divide the tank into 2 sections. fill with water and put saw dust in one section of the tank. filter out the sawdust and backflush it into the other side, valve to change the flow and reverse the process.
