Clinch Fasteners – Hot Rolled Steel

12/04/2015 5:47 AM

Hi

Has any one any experience of using PEM type steel clinch fasteners notably Standoffs, nuts and Studs into hot rolled steel

I know the clinch fastener must be harder than the host material to enable the material to flow into the clinch feature and make the joint but is hot rolled steel too hard or affected by surface scale

Also will steel clinch fasteners work in zinc/galvanised coated sheet steel

Many thanks - answers appreaciated

How about asking the clinch fastener manufacturer?

Wish I could, but we are a competitor to PEM - I have no experience thru our customer base of them using clinch HRS

So go to the PEM website. Locate the fasteners (if any) that they recommend for hot rolled steel. Buy them, try them, test them and document how well they perform.

In short, do your job.

Yes been all over PEM site and other - makes no reference to HRS and quotes CRS as their test medium - conversly it makes no reference that HRS should not be used - quotes host sheet hardness maximums only .

I am being sent customer sheet HRS so we can conduct installation and hardness testing etc

So in short - yes I am doing my job but in meantime posting on here to see if there were any third party experience

Nice try Mate

I have used plain old weld rod in the past to hold insulation to Cs steel. Just up the amps and jam it in the plate, let it cool and bend the rod after insulation is installed.

Thanks but this is customer processed assembly - believe they have designed themselves into a corner by using clinch in HRS

Material surface hardness and material yield strength should be a measure for comparison. I suggest you get the yield strength value for your hot rolled material and compare that against CR sheet.
