Air Circuit Breaker ABB SACE Emax E1

12/27/2015 2:36 PM

We have an air-circuit breaker, brand ABB SACE Emax E1(1600A Motorized fixed). The breaker connects utility power supply to the building. Two breakers are connected interlocked to form a change over switch for utility power supply and standby generator. The breaker failed to connect (close), when switched ON the motor rotate to charge the spring and try to connect but end up with breaker not close. Any one who can help I will appreciate as we currently running on the generator which is very expensive.

Have you tried cycling the breaker on and off and on again? Are you sure it isn't locked?

Yes I have tried switching the breaker ON and OFF and I am sure the breaker is not locked.

When the cost of running the generator exceeds the cost of calling for professional help and a solution, contact ABB tech service.

Rack the breaker out to the "test" position and then see if it will close. From that you can work out where the problem lies.

There's a couple of known problems but I can't see them from my desk in the UK. Phone ABB and save CR4 members time trying to help in a lost cause.

2nd thoughts, after looking though your previous posts your company should embark on a cost cutting exercise.

I agree with TonyS.

After nine years you are still struggling with things that should be second nature, and still asking strangers to do your thinking for you.

I had the same problem. Sometimes it close, other time it doesn't. All control are fine. After taken the neccessary safety requirements, we unscrew the front panel and notice that there is mechanism that has various movable parts that is completly dry. We have lubricated all the movable mechanism starting at the pushbutton going further. We did lubricate both of the ATS breakers and it work as it supose to be. Now, a year has passed already and is transferring perfectly every 2 months when tested. You may check if this is the cause of your problem also..

If this is part of an ATS control panel then there are additional interlocks such as a time delay, utility over/undervoltage, etc. that may prevent the electrical closing of the line breaker, even if it can close locally/mechanically. Call the manufacturer for more info.

Points to consider:

1) Are you certain the "close" circuit is powered from a backup electrical source instead of the "normal" power source?

2) Is the control voltage level of the correct type and polarity? (AC or DC?) (+) to (+) and (-) to (-) ?

3) New breaker and/or first time operation has been attempted?

4) If new; Has the shipping protection blocking and/or bolts/screws been removed?

5) Has any work been done to the switch recently?

6) What is the voltage level being applied to the close coil? Is it correct?

Be careful when applying any lubricants to any electrical switch components because there are numerous components that do not require any lubrication or require special types of lubricants.

Consult the OEM installation and Operations Manual or the switch manufacturer fro their guidance and input.

Is spring charging full. If spring charge is ful then check up the latch. Latch might be faulty and might not be latching spring after fully chaged
