I don't know if there is a "right" field or branch in engineering. All Engineering branches have many cross disciplines involved. For example, a civil engineer must know a little about electrical engineering and a little about mechanical engineering. He must be grounded in physics, in chemistry, and especially in mathematics. The proper engineering course are to teach the student how to use resources available and how to think. It is not the requirement of the student to store all the answers in his/her head, but rather, to know where to go to get the answers. Engineering is mostly common sense use of the materials and discoveries made by sciences over the ages. The proper engineer has the vision and insight for working in cooperation to build a better life for all of humanity.

chtank, I think your definition of engineering, in your reply to the original poster, was brilliant. All very true, for sure. But I believe that he misspoke when he said the words "the right engineering". I think what he meant was "the right engineering for each individual student". The broad term "Engineering" covers a vast field of study and knowledge, of course. And I would think that it's a given, that most engineers chose their particular discipline because of a personal interest or talent. I, for one, would be miserable in the field of Electrical Engineering; although I have enough knowledge of it to assist me in my Mechanical Engineering. But I don't know a damn thing about Nuclear Engineering and little about Genetic Engineering. But yet, I am fairly well versed in Structural/Civil. I guess there is a pattern there. And the right combination of Majors and Minors is important.

But the world of machines is my passion. And finding the right fit for each person is paramount to success and happiness. Finding their passion.

Personally I don't know of any specific film that gives an introduction to all the varied specialties. It would be good to find. Students who have narrowed their career choice down to Engineering in general have a curiosity of how physical things work. That's a start. It seems like it would be very helpful to run the gamut of all the disciplines and compare them, and define them. Explain what a day in the life would be like for each of them. Find specific interests. And what is available. And yes, certainly all the maths and sciences are needed as a basis to any of the fields. But that probably goes without saying.

As a side note ... to support one of the points you made ... I once knew an M.E. who as a student had the most amazing memory for nearly every formula that was presented. In contrast, my memory of that is nothing to boast of. In the end, he turned out to be less than successful, because he didn't truly grasp how to apply them. Me ... I have references for everything, know where to look, and how to use them in the world. I'm not doing too bad, myself. And when all else fails .... there's always CR4!!

I would like to thank you for the reply to which i agree in totality. Actually my requirement is that I need some videos that could be shown to students 10th standards who can get a glimpse what engineeirng is all about and can take an informed decision to choose the branch that suits thier interest.

Thank you once again.
