Math Learning Disorder Common in Schoolchildren

10/28/2005 11:15 AM

The Mayo Clinic has published a study saying that Math LD is common among children and is more of a problem in boys over girls.
The article goes on to say that, "Despite the recognized importance of mathematics, the majority of learning disability research has focused on reading."
I always had trouble in mathematics and excelled in reading and english, and yet I scored higher on the Math portion of my SAT's than I did on the Reading portion.
What do you think that means?

Genetic Differences?

10/28/2005 1:42 PM

If there are genetic differences in the way that boys and girls learn (i.e., process information), then maybe our schools need to abandon the illusion that equality means sameness. While we're at it, we might also consider that we no longer live in an agricultural or industrial age. Very few children need summers off to work on the family farm. Forcing children to remain stationary for long periods of time is great preparation for factory life, but not so smart in an our age of obesity. Clearly, there is room for reform.

I am a public school teacher Ms.ed. (Male elementary science 1,2,3) There is science to back up what you have written. In Ohio we simply ignore it! Ohio also has an unconstitutional funding system that refuses to change. see Derolf decision
