Creating Waves in Science

02/09/2016 6:56 AM

Heads up!

Thursday morning is the day for the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) to hold a press conference.

The rumors have been that we might have evidence for the detection of gravity waves. Perhaps Thursday will shed some light on that.

Leaked reports state that LIGO detected the merger of two black holes (29 and 36 solar masses each) with a sigma of 5.1.

That's a pretty high degree of certainty.

The propagation speed for the wave is consistent with the speed of light with a ring down to kerr at the end.

Results of this detection or something similar are to be published in Nature on February 11 as well.

This is pretty cool. This is the sort of thing they hand out Nobel Prizes for.

It's really a shame that they diluted the stature of the prize by handing them out for other things.

Maybe you have some sort of typo error, perhaps.

I now live very near to the (or a) main facility for this, but I'm not sure it is the only one. One of these days I'll take a tour.

Finding it out may be not a big deal, but the ultimate discovery that should have the most credit is, could they generate even tiny wave in the laboratory.
