Happy 3D Stainless Steel Printing Day from ISU

02/14/2016 4:03 PM

This is a nice piece of equipment.

Does anyone think a steel die with cooling runs and slides incorporated that could be hardened and used for injection molding would or will be possible?

I suppose the surface finish would be the deciding factor for your application. If it can "print" SS then other materials must be possible.

Reninshaw have been printing titanium, inconel alloys, cobalt chrome & aluminium for 4 years or so. The ones I've seen don't have good surface finish.

I don't think we're to that point, yet.

This finish looks like a "near EDM" finish, which is fine for most cavities cooling runs and runners, but not for slides, parting lines or smooth surface finishes.

Still, steel injection molding tooling is for thousands of part runs, not rapid prototyping.

I think we're a long way from making something of that size with 3D printing.

That's my opinion.

Size is not a big problem. I was surprised to see at an engineering show last week a thin wall 3D printed V10 engine block. The internal structure was honeycombed. These are used as sacrificial moulds for sand casting prototype engines.

I can see a niche market but it still looks early but I really like the promise

How about using the technology to print directly on a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell to strengthen the cell?
