What is Nickel Wire 0.025mm 99.98% Used in?

Hi All,

I am trying to do some research and I need to learn about this particular product, what is it used in?

I don't need to know specifics, just some general information. Which industry is it popular in, or how is it used?

Is it used for plating? is it used in EDM processes? Why such a big gap in value over less pure composition wire?

Any guidance/information would be greatly appreciated.

Lately it's gained popularity as a vaping component...but generally speaking it's used in heating coils, vacuum tubes, coins, metal additive for corrosion control...

Fishing leaders are usually Nickel Titanium and have a little larger OD. So you can cross this off your list!

it's length, or should I say diam (0.025mm), not the area...

Well of course it's not length. Diameter of 0.025 mm ~~ 0.001 inch. Area of 0.025 mm2 ~~ 0.007 inch diameter. A substantial difference.

It's also used in wire wound resistors and in inductors. Nickel is conductive and it is magnetic, so it makes a good inductor or choke.

1) Nickel / chromium is superior to nickel for resistive heating or Nichrome wouldn't be so popular. Could be high-purity nickel results in a better quality vapour for vaping.

2) Any conduit of moving electrons is magnetic. Lower resistivity is better for any use I've ever heard of.

If you've got it in your hands, it would be interesting to see what resistance is measured for, say, 100cm.

Temperature sensors.

Ni has a very well documented temperature - resistance correlation.

Besides being used in resistors and coils (these are mostly alloys that improve or reduce the PTC effect) the "pure" Ni wire is used in zone sensing applications.

Most sensors we know do sense at points. The technique used is way to expensive to go for zones.

With a Ni wire it is cheap to make a sensor that is 5 or 10m long and can sense the average temperature over a stretch of pipe.

The Ni100 sensor is used at specific chemical plants that have had issues with bad placed point sensors.

Typical sensor issues:

  • The sensor comes off the surface
  • The sensor is installed too close to a non insulating hanger/support

The trace heating controller will push up the temperature to compensate and try to get the sensor at the right temperature, a lot of chemicals don't like this and get damaged. This could be a bigger issue than too cold, which only results in a high viscosity or local solidification that gets removed as soon as the fluid starts to flow again.

I believe high nickle alloys are used in Mu metal. Mu metal is used in shielding aganist EM fields.
