Carousels in Pharmacy, how to Segregate Radioactive Cancer Drugs

02/21/2016 9:47 AM

hospital floor space is expensive, cubic storage is most expensive in Pharma and OR.

in most pharmacies nationwide med stowage is migrating to dense storage cabinets and dense automated vertical carousels.

the question is how do you stow the cancer radioactive and haz mat drugs? many are comingled. do you have combined meds in one area risking potential issues with pharm techs and pharma repair men or do you have them in their own self contained carousel or storage locker?- like narcotics.

Google "Drug storage".

The reference desk is 3 doors down the hall on the left in ad7.

Does the hospital accrediting agency require compliance to standards for storing pharmaceuticals? That would be a good place to start. I can't imagine a hospital in the US being allowed to stay open if its pharmacy couldn't properly store drugs.

If the hospital can't afford the expense of storing hazardous materials on site, hospital administration will have to figure out an alternative. Maybe a consortium of hospitals can support a central storage facility. Not as convenient but safer for everybody.

How about putting the radioactive stuff in a (relatively) small lead-lined closet? It wouldn't be surprising if regulations already require that, or something similar.

From what I've been able to gather from articles on the web, the nuclear pharma section is separate from the pharmacy area...The nuclear medicines require special handling and certifications and treatment...there are some 44 different radiopharmaceutical drugs with one being narcotic as well...The laboratory area for handling and preparation, compounding, storage and disposal is uniquely tailored for radioactive materials, as are the technicians and lab workers...Though the section may fall under the leadership and management of the central pharmacy head, no hands on contact is usually permitted...The lab and storage area are designed by specification to adhere to the many codes and practices required by law...
