Steam line insulation & gascate thickness

07/30/2007 8:34 AM

1. At steam line, I want to insulation on the seamless m.s. pipe by glasswool. But could any one help me, what primary paint or insulation will give between pipe surface and insulation to remove condensate on the pipe surface when the steam will cold in the pipe.

2. What would be thickness of gascate (for steam line joint) for low pressure steam line (10 kg/cm2) and high pressure steam line (20 kg/cm2)?

Also give its details specification.

It would be helpful for me to design the pipe line.

If the line is full of condensate at ambient then there will be no temperature difference between the contents and the outside, and no moisture on the outside. So painting it won't help.

Occasionally steam pipes are painted with a silver-coloured heat resisting paint, for corrosion protection more than anything else.

Not sure why you would expect condensate on the outside of a steam line, isn't it always going to be hotter or equal in temperature to the surrounding atmosphere? Make sure your paint is rated for the elevated temperature is my only suggestion.

a 90% efficient insulation = an insultation on which you can easily put the palm of your hand and stand comfortably.

If you are using Glass Wool suggest you use 2" thick blanket , 60 Kg/m3 density, 350C. In event of Rock Wool you will get 60 kg/m3 density, 450C , 80 kg/m3 density, 600C and 100 kg/m3 density, 700C.

For Insulation of Steam Mains :

For 1/2" thru 3" main you can easily use 2" thickness - 60 kg/m3 or 80 kg/m3

For 4" & up you double the thickness to 4"- 80 kg/m3

For Insulation of Condensate mains:

2" thickness for all pipe sizes 60 kg/m3.

"gascate" ? or gasket? You can buy imported or make out of packing sheet "Klingerite" 500C , 1/8" upto 10 bar & 1000C for 20 bar.
