Pepperl & Fuchs IS Barrier

02/22/2016 4:47 AM

Gents,

In my compressor control panel one IS barrier's 24 volt input power fuse was blown and I thought this was happened due to the faulty barrier. but I replaced the barrier with new one and the same scenario was happened again. Then I tried with another barrier with 500 mA fuse on the input line, then the barrier was working fine. During the exercise all other wires are removed from the barrier because I thought some assosiated loops were creating this issue, but again and again the barrier's input power fuse was blown out with 250 mA fuse. Anybody can provide the solution and why this is happening?

The barrier model is PEPPERL & FUCHS KFD2-CRG2-1.D

The reason it is happening is that the current in the circuit exceeds that which the fuse can withstand. The cause cannot be seen from here. Look for a short circuit immediately downstream of the barrier and for crossed wires coming in from other circuits.

Second time I tried with barrier as Isolated state. During the exercise all connected cables are disconnected from the barrier except 24 volt input power but again the fuse was blown. Then I changed the input supply cable but no positive outcome. strange...totally I confused and crazy..

Please describe the outcome of the telephone conversations that have taken place with the local Pepperl & Fuchs technical support line. Do bear in mind that the equipment cannot be seen from here.

The equipment is not an intrinsic safety barrier; it is a signal conditioner.

  • One of the possibilities is that the incoming 24V is on the wrong terminals and an internal flywheel diode is disconnecting the fault.
  • Another is that the power rail feature and the incoming 24V are both connected to, and wired incorrectly as, a short circuit across the supply.
