Taxpayer Funded Fiber Internet

04/04/2016 1:57 PM

I have been looking everywhere and can not find the answer. So I thought the gang here can find it. they are incredible and finding odd answers.

I have a question. I had been told and maybe possibly read someplace, I honestly do not remember where, But I remember that when some infrastructure is paid for with a grant or loan or monies from taxpayers dollars, as what is happening in this story here.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2015/07/20/why-the-agriculture-department-is-giving-out-tens-of-millions-of-dollars-for-internet-access/

From what I remember is that, then if these fibers were installed using tax payers money, these fibers have to allow any ISP that wants to,, to offer their services on those fibers. It can not be a monopoly of just one company.

Is this true?

Generally that is true, but there are several different models of broadband infrastructure build-out taking place all at once...

Anywhere I can get this rule or law?

I know this local phone company has had a monopoly of the internet since it began all those years ago, it was them or no net period. And their prices show it.

50 bucks for SLOW DSL 1 meg down 700K up speeds. And we are pretty sure they won't be telling anyone that we can choose a different company if we can get them. to hook up to thee new fibers.

Well they probably don't have a monopoly in the traditional sense, but rather no other provider finds the investment attractive enough to enter this space....try these if you want.....

Well, yes, while they were using only the phone lines of their own, then I'd say it was a monopoly. Obviously no one else could use their copper wire phone lines.

But now with these taxpayer grant funded fiber being installed,,,,,,,,

80 years ago the Rural Electrification Act was signed to provide loans for electricity to rural areas, this is just the modern parallel to it.

But the question remains,

If it is similar, then can any railroad, oops any ISP use this new railroad, oops fiber pathways?

In theory, yes.

In practice, the ISP with the 'gateway' connections to the trunk can restrict access if they want, since the data has to go through their data nodes to get TO the new trunk line, until a service provider that wants access successfully sues them in court. The smaller providers don't have the funds to engage in those lawsuits, the larger ones have already 'quietly agreed' to 'focus their efforts by region,' and not compete with each other over territory.

I find it another example of how far we are behind the curve in some technologies when so many other countries use fiber..Only a public that is unwilling to settle for this and boycott the Internet and Cable companies will cause the "providers" to come around. Always hit them in the pocketbook...

Hard to boycott breathing,

When they are the ONLY provider, you either pay what they ask for or don't have net.

simple.

Money drives the internet in the USA.

List of countries by Internet connection speeds - Wikipedia, the free ...

Global Internet usage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Google is getting closer to providing round-the-world internet coverage

We pay FAR too much for cell phone and internet coverage.

The cell companies have an even bigger racket going. Their infrastructure is all mature but the consumer is still paying for it over and over again.
