Not quite, those rods are actually single turn windings. They have to handle very high current pulses so they need to be very low resistance and inductance, plus transfer heat out very quickly.

It's not rods, it's heavy gauge wire and it is wound. Many of the DC motors used for Material Handling Equipment are wound with heavy gauge wire. Some with 1/16" X 1/4" flat bar. All depends on the current the conductor is going to carry.
