I have a weather satellite ATP receiver that is controlled by a time switch this normally starts a mini disk recorder that runs for 15 minutes after the satellite is detected.
This works fine but of course I have to download the audio files from the mini disk before I can display them which is time consuming.
I have added a facility so that the time switch starts the computer with the Satscape program running hoping that the audio files would be recorded.
unfortunately for the auto recording function to be available a F3 keystroke is required after the program gets going which prevents automatic recording.
Is there any way around this?.
I see a very clumsy solution I could construct hardware that listens for the welcome to Satscape message and is hardwired to the F3 key on a special keyboard, this is the sort of thing we used to do in the 1940's we are supposed to do everything by software now!.

Back in 1972 with my Siemens 300 computer (10 MHz clock 256 Kb memory 16 bit) I could do this easily by writing a short subroutine but I have no idea how to do it running XP Proffesional on my AMD.

I sympathise....sometimes the old ways are still best!

If the software you already have doesn't have the facility hidden somewhere in it's murky depths (and you could doubtless waste a day looking!)...then maybe hardware is simplest! It depends which is quickest easiest for you...There are no special prizes for using 'clever' software...and I bet I can guess which will be quickest!

Good luck

How important is this one for you? Are you using it for some agency? I may be able to help you and can digitize the information and can push into fast data logging system in real time and can also provide some display. Is it worth putting time and to invest in hardware for such thing?

If you think it is important and reasonable funds can be allocated then, let us talk about it. I will ask my junior engineers to do it. Can I have your location details?

Much as I would like to see some proffesional expertise brought to this problem it is of course only a hobby project and no funds are available for research and development.

Anyone who had a commercial use for this would simply leave the computer running continuously with a program such as WxtoImg which would do the job but I wished to economise on power consumption and only turn the computer on when it was needed

Perhaps you can find some local college engineer or professor to help you on this as it is sure an interesting problem and good for learning experience for a start up engineer.

Perhaps you can find some work by other hobby people also who might have put their hand on such thing.

Where are you located?
