Hot-melt Glue

08/03/2007 7:33 AM

Hi,

Can anyone help me with the composistion of Hot melt Glue? Is it biodegradable natural product?

Is there any other method of making it flowing (like a fluid) without heating for ease of application?

Thanks in advance

Hot melt bonds well with both surface to be joined. BUT HOT MELT HAVE LOW STRENGTH AND JOINT FAILS DUE TO RUPTURE OF HOT MELT. Can any one light this.

Presumably this means that the glue itself fails, rather than the bond line between it and the surfaces being joined. The moral here is make sure the glue line is as thin as possible.

I believe, hot melt glue is a high melting point wax (could be microwax) that comes in a coarse powder form and can be melted and formed into sticks for use in a hot melt gun.

Hotmelt joint thickness approx 25 - 30 microns, it is applied on a roll coater with anilox rolls to maintain hotmelt thickness.

We must be talking at cross purposes.

As I understand it...

Hot melt glue is supplied as a stick and applied with a hot melt glue gun in great runny gouts by kids building their school project and it ends up on the carpet.

It is hand for tacking things together or joining fabric leather wood but doesn't have serious load bearing qualities.

It's a pig to get out of your fur....grrrrrrrr

Hi Del, (What does the cat stands for!!)

You hit the nail on the head.

That is exactly the product I was talking of. A product which can be made without much capital and technical knowhow... a product which has a ready market which can be easily marketed...

What hot melt chemistry have you been trying? Many hot melts, such as a polyester- based (or polycarbonate-based-) polyurethane HMA should have the tensile of most substrates, and remain flexible to various degrees, depending on the chemistry.

Hi,

It looks like I have opened a Pandora's box. Until now I knew only of Hot Melt Glue Sticks available in the super markets. It looks like the subject is very deep. Any suggestions on how I can acquire knowledge on different types of hot melt glue and formulations.

For your informations I am one of the freaks who believe in the ideals of serving the poorer community with small projects. I am against the concept of donations of food, clothing etc. I prefer to give them a way of catching fish rather than giving them fish.

My interest in the subject was to see whether manufacturing of hot melt glue sticks can be made as a cottage industry.

If you think along my line please see how you can contribute (I stress not financially, but with ideas and know how)

I will check with the manufacturer but it is little sticky before and after application. Even the ruptured surface is sticky. We receive in granular form.

Is it that the hotmelt it self requires some curing or its property changes with temperature and application time ?

I was trying to remember the name of a company I cover and couldn't think of it. Then all of a sudden, boom, Infast came to my mind.

When you cover as many as I do you are lucky for anything to come out of the blur.
