Replacement Part for Dacor Downdraft Part

06/08/2016 7:25 PM

Hi,

i have an old Dacor 4400 p3 series ventilation system for my cooktop. It's a downdraft with the blower housed on the outside wall. I decided to take apart my island and change the cabinets so I disconnected the wiring. Once I put everything back together again, it does not work. All the power works up until solid state motor control, which is the variable control switch that turns the fan on, high to low. Dacor does not make that part anymore, and I am having trouble finding a replacement to control. The control has a white, black, and brown wire and the unit also has a capacitor. I am looking for some help to find a replacement switch that will work on this downdraft.

Thanks for any help. And, I do not want to buy a new unit. Because I don't use it that much I'd rather Gerry rig something together than buy something new even if it works with half the amount of exhaust.

Thanks!!!!! Liz

First you need an electrician....or an appliance repair person....someone who can troubleshoot and identify the problem...only then can a recommendation be made...

How do you know it needs to be replaced, if it worked before?

Because when I hooked up the switch to turn the fan on, it didnt turn on. All wires have power up to that point. I guess it could be something in between the fan itself, and the capacitor, but I had damaged the turning knob when I disassembled it.

All the wires have voltage? What is the voltage? How many phases? What is the FLA of the motor? Did you jump the control to see if the motor is operating properly?

All the wires up to the switch has power, 110. The motor is 1 phase, and did not try to jump the motor because I am weary because of the capacitor needs some current for brief time. and killing the motor. I'm not sure what FLA of motor is.

Im not an electrician, just a handy women who likes to do all my own repair unless I can't:)

thanks for advice!

Yes you seem to have just enough knowledge to be dangerous as we like to say....haha You see the problem is that there are many different types of motors and ways of controlling the speed....and replacing a $50 control may work ,or it may cook the motor, possibly even start a fire....and that's assuming the motor and the capacitor is still good, and that you have it hooked up properly....If you don't know how to test these components and have the proper tools for doing so, well you see it's not a tenable situation...The plain truth is there are some household repairs that are better left to the pro's. one of them is A/C work, and one of them is appliance and electrical repair....

The switch is a ranco, the part number is a little blurry, maybe -410 600. I looked for it but couldn't find it on the 5 or 6 websites I looked on. Thanks, Liz

The remote blower down-drafts have two connections for control and two for power. One set is the up-down motor for the intake and the other is on-off and speed for the remote blower. Make sure you have both connected or it won't turn on.

There are two microswitches inside the pop-up intake that switch the mains on and off for the blower as well as signal the position of the intake. The blower won't turn on until the "up" switch is closed. This signals the up motor to stop going up as well. I have seen this micro switch fail and prevent the blower from coming on.

The alternative is to use an arduino and a potentiometer and motor shield+MOSFET setup. There are many motor control projects that will work for your application available online.

I tend to agree with SolarEagle that even a handy lady must know when she venture into something that is beyond DIY. As I mention previously on this forum as qualified people we feel obliged to help where we can but we need to honour our professional obligation to put safety first and refrain from advising in cases where it is obvious that only a lengthy lesson on systems and technical detail wil bring the OP on a level to execute your response in a safe and responseble manner.

I understand safety first, but that's why I posted for help here. I was just checking if this was a simple case of buy this switch instead, it does the same thing.
