Ether as a starting aid

08/04/2007 3:03 AM

We are using the Ether as starting aid in the engines( high way truck or marine or car engines).

How exactly the ether is helping the engine to get start in cold weather.

What are these terms " one-shot ether, continous ether, post ether."

Can any body respond to these queries

Ether is an oxygenated hydrocarbon with a very low boiling point and conversely a very high vapor pressure. It´s extremely volatile and has a high energy burn. So basically it makes your regular fuel more explosive. Handle wiith extreme care but you´d of course know this.

As I recall, ethers also tend to form peroxides, which in turn form free radicals, which cause detonation in internal combustion engines. That is why diethyl ether (the ingredient in commercial "starting fluid" spray cans) is so effective in starting diesel engines. I can recall as a kid using it to start our big Ford 8600 diesel tractor. Even with just a little snort, the engine would start right up in subzero weather. It would also knock for several seconds until it cleared all the ether. The peroxide formation is also why you don't want to have cans of starting fluid sitting around for years on the shelf.

As far as the term goes, I believe if too much is used too many times it washes out all of the carbon build up on valves and on the cylinder walls so more Blow by is created. Thus the more need for the either when it might not have been needed under the same circumstances in the past.

No Gear heads eh? Ether is used when it is so cold the fuel doesn't atomize to burn.

The Ether atomizes to below -50deg. F. The Ether is dry (no lubrication) and very hot burning. Gas and diesel engines do not handle Ether well so limit its use to a minimum.

The detonation from Ether Breaks rings and burns valves. It ignites to early and it is easy to use to much.

Carbon build up is incomplete combustion from oil and or fuel. When the engine has wear to the point it needs rebuilt the carbon can plug the gaps or slop in the worn parts. (technical jargon!) The product STP (raw plastic) does this temporarily.

If you use Ether to start an engine in warm weather you have other problems you need to deal with, the Ether is causing more harm than help.

Hope this was of some help.

I only know when I left North Dakota (-40 in winter), I never had to buy any more ether.

It made a pretty effective basis for model aeroplane fuel at school. I'm sure the lab staff didn't need to think long as to why ether consumption outstripped most of the other chems in the lab.

Didn't half stink if we ran one indoors!

If my memory serves me right:

One shot Ether is used to start the engine either sprayed into the intake manually or mounted on the engine and controlled from a button on the dash.

Continuous Ether was mounted beside the engine and turned on for increased power for hill climbing etc. of course don't expect 200,000 miles between overhauls.

No clue about Post Ether.

Could be wrong that was 30 years ago.
