Yeah, makes you wonder what was really going on.

My point is, if the technology really was available to meet the regulations then surely VW would simply use it, wouldn't they?

But if it wasn't available and that's why they cheated then obviously the others are cheating too.

I really can't see VW cheating if the technology to meet the regs was freely available on the market.

There's something we're not being told and probably we'll never find out.

When they were passing out the 'Green is for the environment, not just the cash' Koolaid VW said, 'No thanks. I'll just have water.' which really upset the high master so examples needed to be made.

That's my theory.

So, you think VW is coughing up $15B for PR, instead of fighting it for even $1B for the ambulance chasers?

Have some more of that Kool aid.

Nope.

I think they are coughing up the 15+ billion now because the greedy greenies at the top want to set an example of what will happen if you don't keep drinking their Koolaid.

How much of that 15+ billion do you think will ever go back to the customers who bought their vehicles?

I will be very surprised if more than 10% makes it back to them and the rest just disappears to never be seen again along the way.

And the cow jumped over the moon.

Just who are these imaginary "greedy greenies at the top"?

Likely this will put VW out of business........Just like Big Tobacco was put out of business in the U. S. .....

VW brought this on itself, trying to compete with the Japanese and other Euro car manufacturers on "clean diesel" technology. Supposedly a good idea during the time of much higher gasoline prices. And, European Greenie Governments tax the heck out of those poor chumps over there for fuel....always have! Only now, they cite "CLIMATE CHANGE" as the reason for the high taxation....................

As far as VW matching their competition in the markets.......Hey.....if you can't beat 'em, or equal them......FAKE IT!!! Right??

Lyn, you never get it, do you??

The Greenies are the EPA, CARB, and anyone else who wants to jump on the "grab the cash" bandwagon! And, California.....those poor folks.....what a terrible thing VW did ONLY TO THEM.......

No, California smells GREEN, and needs GREEN to pay off its humongous debts, due to their massive cash "give-aways" brought about by their social (and environmental) re-engineering programs.

So, in case you were temporarily blinded by the facts.....

The facts:

"Volkswagen must file Tuesday in a San Francisco federal court will include $5 billion more than the $10 billion it had previously reported"

"Volkswagen has set aside 16.2 billion euros ($17.9 billion) to cover costs from the scandal, including seven billion euros for legal risks."

"Volkswagen will pay $2.7 billion in fines to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board, and spend $2 billion on clean-emissions technology"

"VW also faces fines from US regulators potentially running to the tens of billions of dollars, and a criminal investigation over the scandal."

"It is facing similar charges and litigation in Europe and elsewhere for the same issues."

most of the victims would be happy to just have the crooks buy the cars back, they really have no resale value

They will have a resale value,,, there will always be people out there who will try to get a "deal" and do not care about the environment.

Just saying.

okay, how about a fraction of what they thought they would sell for? now they are damaged goods and pollute up to 40 times MORE than advertised

True. But if,,, they are not regulated out or somehow "fixed", I'm just saying, they will likely still be around.

If I find one in my price range I'd have zero issues with buying it just as many people who are more concerned with their cash flow than the supposed environmental legislation rules are.

Screw the emissions numbers. I don't own and haven't owned a vehicle with a functional emissions system in my life.

After I get a vehicle junking as much of the emission system as I can in order to boost power and fuel economy is always on the top of the things to do list.

Those numbers are a little hyped. The cars still meet 2007 emissions standards and we're talking micrograms.

Depending on the state/locality and subsequent tailpipe emission testing standards (which most states/localities do NOT have) the methods reveal different amounts of emissions over the limit.

How about we just install the magic AC hydrogen generators on those VW's, and lower their NOx, etc. and make them run the same on 30% less fuel with only a small injection of hydrogen in the air intake?

These can be had for a song, and all you have to do is fill up the water every so many hours.

On another thought, what car out there consistently runs and produces precisely the as labeled amount of pollution, has the same fuel economy, etc. as right off the production floor?

It's actually worse than that. Car companies don't print money. Fines just result in higher costs passed on to the customers.

So, I have been enjoying about 50 MPG with my 2013 Jetta Sportwagen since I bought it new. I pollute with toxic tailpipe emissions which are below 2007 standards, but not the current ones.

I'm really okay with that. Despite all of the hype, it's really not that bad. Overall, the air isn't as clean as intended, but if we all stopped driving it would be a helluva lot cleaner, too.

Now VW is probably going to pay me about $5,000 (WA/OR settlement) and offer a buyback at bluebook OR "fix" my car, which will reduce mileage by about 10%.

The rear gate lift struts blew out last week, and the clutch is getting a little particular.

Time for a new Jetta Sportwagen, I think.

That's okay. I was never club member material anyway.

I tried the Anarchists club for a bit but they kicked me out for being too rational in my approaches to anarchy.

I also tried the Passive Aggressives club but they too tossed me out. Said it was for breaking a rule yet what they claimed I did wrong was not in their charter rules sets.

I tried the Baiters club for a while too but I failed to ever become a public Master baiter so they kicked me out. I was rather okay with that.

I was in the Voyeurs Club for a bit but they tossed me out for over participation. Said my willingness to socialize was not fit for their standards.

I also started a club just for myself but I have never shown up for meetings or paid my dues. I guess I will have to kick myself out one of these days.

Oh well.

It would have been SO MUCH CHEAPER if VW had just paid off its whistleblowers, and just cried "OOPS! MY BAD!!" "Cars are just so complicated......!!"

.......Just like the good law abiding folks at the IRS, over the tax exempt status of conservative groups before the 2012 election cycle..... "Not a smidgeon of corruption, just normal goings-on, the IRS is just such a big organization that NO ONE knows how that happened....."
