Independence Day

07/04/2016 9:16 PM

I just had this 4x8 foot flag painted by a local artist and installed on my barn in Minnesota.

Independence Day, July 4th, means different things to people.

We in America got independence from tyranny. The British got rid of some troublemakers.

Burgers are on the grill.

Happy 4th of July.

The British also got rid of a prime source for cheap raw materials, forced buyers of their finished goods, and a cash cow, through taxes, to fatten their coffers to fund their empire, and a source for crews for their ships and armies.....

Tyranny?

I seem to remember that your country was hell bent on destroying itself, not the War of Independence, I refer to the war between the North and the South.
Then was not California owned and run by the Spanish? Part of the mid west run by some other country?
Yes, y'all could be the troublemakers you refer to.....
I do like the reference to Brexit.... and look how that turned out, so things can only get better for us!

However.. while I love the 4th of July and celebrate it with many of my friends, just remember if it wasn't for the British, y'all would be speaking German right now.. in fact we all would be!

A very Happy 4th of July guys

Every country actually goes through that... The thing about our civil war is that the world watched to see what happened because it was the first war in the industrial age.....

everyone watched...except maybe Britain,... its still was hurt from the spanking that it receive from our independence and was supporting the south.

As far as speaking German, it could have easily be French, like our friends to the North... but it wasn't...

my reference to German is two fold.. First, America took a vote to see what language would be the country's prime language. English or German? We know that result!

Second, if Hitler had not been stopped in Europe, we could ALL be speaking German!

Let's face it while the USA has independence, it's really not, and neither is the UK.

We depend on the USA as much as it depends on the UK.

WW2, GW1 & 2, Libya, Syria.. etc, etc.....

We live in a rural Northeast Wisconsin, with a large German contingency. All farmers.

For us, We had Irish on one side, Polish settlement on another and German on the other side Norwegians were a little bit farther down the road (20 miles).

We were Swiss, and fitting more so into the Germans. No all of the family's tried to Americanize, by speaking English, and even changing their name.

I have to say, that the German's were a little .... unrefined... and almost as bull headed as the Irish.

As well as dependency... I agree, its a flat world.

When did America take this vote on language? Since when do/did British colonies speak German?

And yes, USA has independence. It decided its independence 1: At risk of the full wrath of King George, the signers of the Declaration of Independence put their names on a document spelling out the full details of the charges they had against the Crown. UNHEARD OF AT THAT TIME! 2: The formers of the American Constitution devised a government/economic institution/system never before tried in the history of the World. It was completely different from any European or World government at that time........The Great American Experiment.

So now, will England be able to stomach the challenges of being economically on its own? Or, will it run scared, and be intimidated into again joining the European Union? For that matter, will the European Union be able to survive without the financial assets of England?

No, America truly is, and has been, independent. Yes, we trade in a global economy. That hasn't always been, though. America doesn't, and hasn't, taken orders from the UN, and not from a European, or other, Union. The US doesn't depend on England.

And no, the USA doesn't depend on the UK. Perhaps the other way around, though. Even in WWII, it was Great Britain depending on the USA, not the other way around. Yes, GB had broken the German Enigma Code......But the US would have overcome its enemies, anyway. That can't be said of England, that it would have survived Germany on its own. Fact was, it was on the verge of starvation, and running critically low on food, fuel, munitions, aircraft and ships. For England, the enemy was at the gate, and surrounded.

But yes, the USA had its divisions. During the Revolutionary War, the southern Colonies were mostly loyalists. That's why Great Britain's tactic to divide the North from the South. In the South, it was mostly a war between Americans, with several thousand British troops leading the charge. The Civil War wasn't the first major clash between armies of the North and South.
