Software To Read The Data On RS232 (DB9) Port of PC

07/20/2016 2:54 AM

Hi;

In one of our flexo printing machine, the communication protocol between HMI to 48nos frequency inverter drives for setting motors is RS485 via an RS232 to RS485 converter i.e. HMI sends data to RS232 to RS485 converter and then to all drives. I want to sniff the data in this loop. I will use another RS232 to RS485 converter and receive the data to my Laptop having WXP. Kindly let me inform a free version of any good software (tested and verified) to read the data.

Thanks in advance

If it's just ASCII printing characters, you could use Hyperterminal.

I have already tried by Hyperterminal but could not.

The communication protocol is as following;

2Wire communication

Baud rate 38400

Stop bits 1

Data bit 10

No Parity

Did you set "Flow control" to "None"?

A Google search comes up with loads of possibilities, but I haven't used any of them (always did my own thing, usually in some variety of Basic).

You first need to know what protocol the inverters are using. Most likely it is using Modbus protocol. If that is the case, there are a lot of programs out there that you can use, but you will still have to interpret the data.

It's not free, but I believe they have a trial version, my favorite is Docklight from Germany.
