Proper Location of OHL to Install Line Voltage

08/06/2016 8:49 AM

HI, SIR,

This is Engineer Mohamed working in Saudi electricity co. we have medium voltage networks overhead lines 13.8 kv we would like to install regulator for medium voltage

to regulates the voltage variation on long overhead lines about 50km length with load about to 6 MW

SO HOW WE CALCULATE AND DEFIND THE PROPER LOCATION FOR INSTALLATION TWO REGULATER CONNECTED AS OPEN DELTA OR THREE REGULATOERS CONNECTED AS STARE FOR THAT LINE.

Calculations cannot be made without input data...questions for you to ask...

  1. What is the ingoing source [voltage, frequency range and impedance] to your 13.8 kV line?
  2. Where are the load positions( in distance from source)?
  3. Proposed parameters of 13.8 kV line?
  4. Minimum/maximum kW & kVA of loads?
  5. Type of load(s) and parameters (for example, motors and transformers will have considerable inrush and starting currents)?
  6. Real requirements for voltage regulation? For example, maximum dip-down and jump-up and recovery time - it is unlikely that regulators which can maintain voltage within ~3% on every cycle (even during motor/transfo start will be economic or necessary.
  7. What dips and recovery time apply to the source feeding your line, say if it is a generator?

Transformers with automatic tap changers are standard items for power systems (see manufacturer's literature for performance) but their correction times are in seconds.

Ask your electrical engineer.

LynDoor University™IRA Engineer courses will certificate the student's abilities, in triplicate, for many discipline desired.

These courses are tailored to the individual's qualifications and ability to pay.

Engineer Mohamed may have matriculated with one of our remote sites.

Why do you think you need regulators? Has an analysis of the (existing?) network already been conducted?

Concentrate on the large industries or areas of industry as they are probably going to be the customers that are pulling the regulation down for the network.

Start from there making sure you tailor the solution to your customer's load profile and overall network otherwise you could make things worse.

Your power transmission capability is improved with higher voltage, so put the regulator as far upstream of your consumers as possible. But you also need to consider where your sensing point is, at the consumer, and how far you can send your sensing signal reliably.

Many voltage regulators control the voltage at the source end of a line, and model the line impedance to the load. So based on a certain load, you calculate the voltage drop to the consumer, and adjust the sending end voltage to get the desired consumer voltage at the end of the line.

More accurate is to put the regulator equipment at the load end of the line, of course
