I do this with Samba.

But you need to set up quite some things in the Linux server and I have no experience with Windows XP professional and server applications (I have a Home version which has quite some settings predefiend and unchangable, setting up a workgroup is also simple)

All you have to do is to make the linux computer part of the Windows workgroup. The shares on the Linux computer are then visual for those who have the right to see them.

Check the manuals end how-to files on samba.org

I copy UNIX files to my XP Windows machine all the time. All I needed to do was get a UNIX account. Then, I installed SSH (Secure Shell) on my PC. I log into the UNIX server with my Windows network user name and password. Forget about trying to log in as root to the Linux server unless you own it.

Are you the administrator of the Linux box, as well. If yes, you should know how to add yourself to a group and give yourself permissions and a password. If you administer only the PCs, you're going to need to ask the Linux admin to set you up.

There are two commands in the MS Windows cmd.exe environment(they are actually unix commands added to MS Windows) that can help do the job. rsh and rcp. From a cmd.exe window type "rcp /?" and "rsh /?" to get the command syntax.
