Selection of Surge Diverter in Indoor Switchgear

09/08/2016 5:56 AM

Hi!

Proper selection of surge arrester also very important for the surge protection of electrical equipment.

I want to discuss on the criteria on the basis of which it should be selected.

1. System earthing i.e. earthed or unearthed & Voltage .

2. Co-efficient of earthing.

3. system rating & MCOV rating

4. Temporary OVF

5. Switching surge RDV

6. Class of surge arrester

7. 2.2PU or 2.5 PU levels for both earthed & unearthed system

8. BIL value like 12kv/28kv/75kvp etc

Kindly suggest me how one can select a right surge arrester considering all the points. Or is there any method for selection the same?

Note: The arrester is indoor type.

Regards

If you've got any sense, and the jury is out on that given your earlier post on circuit breakers and fuses, you don't do it on your own. Instead, you pick up the phone and talk to equipment suppliers and work the problem together. That way, if something goes wrong then you've got some come back.

Remember. Your job is to retire without having killed or maimed anyone.

You can read our guide on surge diverters (or surge suppressors) on Engineering360. It's available here: http://www.globalspec.com/learnmore/electrical_electronic_components/surge_suppressors/surge_suppressors

There are a couple of links at the bottom of the page that provide more information.

We also have a list of specifications for these products. Click the help link next to any spec to learn more about it.

Yes Shibnath, I agree with authors of posts #1-4. It could be a complex task, and probably not ideal to cover on a forum like this? I'm no expert on this subject, but can find my way. Even so, this is one of those subjects where a little knowledge can be very dangerous. And when you start talking about instrumentation, now there you need to be awake! I have found the bigger providers of surge arresting equipment quite willing to assist with guidance (always in the hope that they'll get the order!). They tend to be very knowledgeable, as their reputation is on the line should something go wrong. Understanding the minutiae (I've always wanted to use this word in a post!) of your actual physical installation characteristics are so important in order to get an optimum solution. I usually spoke to two or so suppliers as part of my homework, and a few times they even came to site to understand the details of the setup.

If you have a specific question, then I'm sure the usual suspects here will throw in their opinions! Good luck...
