Ice Bear: Hydrogen Powered Zamboni

11/09/2005 9:58 AM

ePower Synergies Inc., has designed a new ice surfacing machine that runs on hydrogen fuel technology. The "Ice Bear" as the machine is called, has two major hurdles to cross. First the popularity of the Zamboni brand, which is synonymous with ice surfacing, and a $150,000 price tag per unit, as opposed to $65,000 for a Zamboni. Bruce Wood, president of ePower Synergies Inc., is confident that the price will decrease as more parts become available and that the lower emissions from Ice Bears will make them popular.

If the Ice Bear is more than twice the price of the Zamboni, will the cool little key chains also cost more?

Indoor pollution

You ever been in a small hockey rink when an old zamboni is used? The combustion fumes really linger. The Ice bear could see some serious benefit if indoor pollution laws are passed in municipalities.
