1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

10/27/2016 2:01 PM

I went out to start my Jeep, she turned over just fine but did not start. This is typical. I usually have to turn the key over twice to get her to start. Not this time! I turned the key off and turned it on again...NOTHING! No lights, no nothing, just nothingness..the sound of silence! As I turned the key to the off position the first time there was a barely audible electronic noise....

suggestions? thoughts? ideas?

Clean your battery posts and connections....check your ignition fuse....check the ignition switch....check your vacuum hoses....

Call for a tow truck to bring the vehicle to a mechanic. If you're lucky the problem is just an old weak battery and the tow truck will be able to jump start this Jeep so you can drive somewhere to get a replacement battery. More than likely the dead battery will be just another symptom of a bigger problem. Your charging circuitry could be also dead, something is not turning OFF when the engine isn't running or the cabling harness is shorted out to chassis somewhere.

"she turned over just fine but did not start"

Maybe you hurt her feelings. Have you given her flowers to make up?

Seriously when she turned over did it sound normal? Like turning over quickly, or was it a slower than normal turn over.

Do your headlights work now? Are they bright?

Have you tried jumper cables?

If it's a dead battery, all your radio settings and alarm/antitheft codes may be lost.

Are you sure it's not a Cavalier that just looks like a Jeep?

AS previously stated: check all connections from the battery, which include the starter connection. Being its a Laredo I assume it has the 4.0L inline 6cyl? When the starter goes bad on those it will kill your battery very fast. Typically the engine will turn over slower than normal the first time or two, the next time you try to start it, it will completely drain your battery or pull so many amps it will appear to be a battery issue. If your Jeep has the 5.2L V-8 then first guess would be a bad connection or battery.
