A380 Rolls Royce engine destruction

08/12/2007 10:00 PM

What's it like to drop a fan blade at 3000 rpm on an A380 Airbus Rolls Royce engine?

This is scary but it's also engineering at its finest! Video

Whatd'ya think?

Spectacular !

I never get to blow up anything .

PS. Little safety note for electronics guys...

Last week we had a fault in a circuit board which caused an 3,300 uF/35v electrolytic to blow. The board had the power remover and was being inspected ...the score lines in the can didn't rupture. The whole can popped off, hit the guy and the forehead and bouced back, ending up 15yards away! He had a nasty bruise and a small cut....

Only inches from his eye...

So watch out even after you have switched off the power. I'd never seen one go like that before.

Except for it being near his eye, it's probably better that the can did blow off. I've been sprayed by the stinky yellow stuff and believe me it sprays everywhere and is hot.

I had to do a damage assessment on an F-111A back in the'80s. The AC ingested a bald eagle during low level flight and severely damaged the # 1 engine. Compressor vanes penetrated center fuel tanks, wing tanks, structural components, completely went through large engine access panels (composite).

The most threatening was where the vanes severed several hydraulic lines and an accumulator --- resulting in a serious fire. This AC was not able to make it back to base and was forced to land at a small municipal airport, which, of course is not equipped to deal with a problem of this magnitude. The fire was extinquished (only with the help of "Lady Luck") and of course the AC was sent for depot level repairs. Almost two years later the AC was back in the air.

A Fan Blade in your case might cause similar damage. This is not a pretty sight to see, not to mention, it is a life threating situation
