GE and Schenectady

01/19/2017 10:08 AM

Being from the capital region of New York, I found this article pretty interesting. I particularly was interested in how people would go to work at GE right out of High School and stay their entire lives. That's pretty rare nowadays...

Yeah, it doesn't look good when a city tries to "revitalize" itself with a casino. Especially when there are already casinos and horse tracks 1 to 2 hrs away to the North (Saratoga Race Track and Casino), West (Turning Stone Casino), and East (Foxwoods Casino).

Are they expecting to suck the last drop of blood from the area?.....or is this a laundering operation....or perhaps a little bit of both, eh....

My guess is the blood thing. At this point laundering would probably help the local economy, so it can't be that.

My guess is that this is the last stage before lights out, unless someone we all know helps to re-kindle the fires of our nation, and gets the wheels rolling once again.

It will not involve phoney tax kickback exemptions for locating in NY State. It will involve a general upheaval of the tax structure in favor of businesses of all kinds, and health care (not necessarily insurance) availability to actual workers.

The reason you got a score of 1 for off topic is not because your comment was spot on, it is because the Guardian newspaper is a liberal controlled media outlet.

And you upset someone by speaking your mind, like you can't have freedom of speech, unless they approve of your opinion.

I would disservice my birds by placing the Guardian newspaper in the bottom of their cage.

I would however throw it out on the sidewalk and relieve myself on it. Pretty much everything else in or coming from the northeast, the same principle applies. They are welcome to die in the cold as far as I am concerned.

OH, "you" don't like Texans? Really? How about we just shut off your damn gas supply?

It doesn't really fit in with the whole Millennial "Gig" economy. Something about taking a year off to hike Tibet or needing a play station in the break room doesn't seem to jibe well with old school industries.

Of course the whole devote your life to the company in exchange for job security, a solid health plan and pension isn't really happening anymore either.

The new urban strip mall: Casino, adult bookstore, by-the-hour motel, liquor store and pot shop. Full service and you don't have to drive.

I grew up 6 miles north of the Schenectady GE plant, in Burnt Hills NY. As a kid, I remember the huge number of autos parked in front of the plant. Literally thousands of cars. The place was bee hive of activity in the 60's and early 70's.

My own Grandfathers worked there, as did many of my uncles. My paternal Grandfather started working there in the late-1920s, then left GE to join the Army during WWII. After the war he came back to GE and worked as a machinist. Eventually over the years, he had worked his way up to Head Machinist position in the Large Stream Turbine Generator building, carving out the turbine blades on a huge milling machine. He retired after 44 or 45 years of service, just before the huge layoffs. Heck, even my Grandmother worked at the plant during the war and afterwards, until the mid-1960s.

Schenectady is a ghost of it's former self, but thank God Mike's Hot Dogs (est. 1947) on Erie Blvd. is still in business! The best dogs with the works in the world!

I predict that the new casino will fold within 10 years. It will draw in the seedy types, which the city doesn't need. Ummmm, where is the money going to come from to support it? People in the city and surrounding area don't have money to blow, unless they're state workers. What a freaking joke.
