Making Capacity of an Air Circuit Breaker

1. What is the reason of specifying a making capacity of a ACB? Why Breaking Capacity of ACB does not come in picture when ACB is Switched ON on fault? And as Making Capacity is peak sensing, how RMS Sensing Releases will sense them? Thanks in Advance.

In many compact ACBs (note "compact") the CB can successfully make the short-circuit current, but cannot latch on. In effect, such a CB acts like a current limiting CB. So it may chatter, and destroy itself. To prevent this, the CB is assigned a making current value, at which it will make and latch successfully. It may not have the capacity tobreak the SC current.
