To most people, crystals mean diamond bling, semiprecious gems or perhaps the jagged amethyst or quartz crystals beloved by collectors.

To Norman Yao, these inert crystals are the tip of the iceberg.

If crystals have an atomic structure that repeats in space, like the carbon lattice of a diamond, why can’t crystals also have a structure that repeats in time? That is, a time crystal?

also known as non-equilibrium matter. What applications can you guys think of ?

My thoughts are on energy conversion or storage.

I thought I had a patent on this.... Patent # ou812... Guess not....

Mine has a 6:1 ratio, so for every 50 years, I can go 300 years in to the future or the past.

I have the data to prove it, but I'm not showing it to you.

Just speculation...

new type of fast switch with high hold off voltage

new oscillator

structures that make use of rapidly varying mechanical properties... perhaps armour for combat or space exploration that rapidly changes between extremely hard and very tough on a small scale to disrupt high velocity penetrators.

new types of sensors that use the property being measured to motivate the time varying property of the material

materials with higher anisotropy for transmission of various fields/fluxes and perhaps modulation of the same.

Time crystals cannot exist at equilibrium, but need to be driven away from equilibrium to show an oscillation or variation in time.

For a long time, it was believed that chemical reactions would only proceed to equilibrium. However, there are a small number of known chemical reactions that oscillate. (Just when you think you understand chemistry...)
