How To Use Same Modscan Software for Data Logging and Graphics

03/18/2017 11:12 AM

Hi all,

Is it possible to use modscan to save the real time data and presenting graphs? I am trying to connect with the controller thru modbus with rs232 to usb converter to my laptop, in connection the modscan soft. shows the value correctly, but I need to leave my laptob in the station for 3 or 4 days and saves the data, even raw data.

regards

Two options.

You can save data as a text file (then copy and paste into a spreadsheet) or there is what WinTech calls a Simple trend chart that involves setting up a custom display.

1. Save Data as text file

I've done it. It works.
Description in the Help File:

Setup > Capture Text

Save the file somewhere

Capture Frequency

2. Simple Trend Chart

Never done it, I've only ever seen the item in the Help file

The resolution of graphics stinks, but you can find your way there and read it.

Modscan32 is a generic Modbus master that runs on a Windows platforms.

I've had a licensed version for probably 15 years now, (License was maybe $50 ? back then) so I don't know what the trial version does or doesn't do. The license has transferred to probably 6 or 7 PCs over that time frame.

I normally use Modscan check how a slave responds and what format the floating point values use.

It is not a generic serial app, like hyperterminal. It expects act as a Modbus master and format messages in Modbus RTU, Modbus ASCII, or TCP (Ethernet) and then display the reply value from the slave. It will write a value, too.

It'll display data in traffic mode, with every query and every response, but I rarely ever use that mode. I use it to see if I get the value I'm expecting from register XXXXX.

A different app simulates a Modbus slave.

The PC obviously needs whatever physical layer network is required - RS-232, RS-485 or Ethernet.

FYI

I just discovered that Simple Trend Chart is an option not included in my license.

I had a slave sitting on the bench, so I fired up Modscan and plugged in an Ethernet cable to try the Simple Trend chart. However, the Simple Trend Chart plotted only zeros, not the true values.

I poked around the found out that Trend chart is an option that comes with a license upgrade to Modscan32-Pro.

No software company is ever prone to give away the entire loaf of bread, when only a few crumbs will still attract flies.

IT purchases these days are sort of like seeing a giant highway ad sign for hot, fresh buttered bread, along with the words "free", and "competitive", but when you see the store front later, and pull in, and walk up to the counter, they are offering a small crust of bread with no butter at all on it. If you want the bull-flown version of it, you have to pony up the cashola, then you get a nice slice, and a pat or moo-salve.

I also noticed when capturing text for the Holding register, you can't do for input register in the same time, I am not using the full version.

I believe that you can open a 2nd window, and configure the windows so that the 1st window queries holding registers with Function Code (FC) 03 and the 2nd window queries registers with Function code 04. How multiple windows spins out for data capture, I don't know.

And, whether you can get is setup and running within the time period allowed for the trial version, I don't know.

I suspect that the trial version timeout is far too short for the 3-4 day time period you need. I suspect that the trial version timeout is on the order of minutes, not days.
Simply Modbus, another generic Modbus master, allows configuring for different formats on the same page/window (Modscan 32 only allows for one format), but I can't recall whether one can mix FC calls on the same page. I do not remember the details of data capture, either, other than it has a LOG button on the work window. Simplymodbus.ca - not dot com.
