I read an electronic magazine in which there is a report on rotary switches. After reading it, I became interested in rotary switches, so I searched some materials and information about this topic, but found that it is not specific at all. Today, I come to this forum to turn to you to let me open the veil of rotary switches for you.
Here are my following understandings:
Rotary switches can be used to replace the traditional resistance potentiometer simulation function of the rotary pulse generator, these rotary switches are usually used in the instrument front panel and audio and video control panel man-machine interface, rotary switch using orthogonal optical encoder as a substitute for analog potentiometer , These rotary switches are similar in appearance to conventional or resistive potentiometers, but the internal construction of these rotary switches is fully digital and uses optical technology. Similar to the traditional incremental encoder product there are two orthogonal output signals (channel A and channel B) that can be directly connected to the encoder processing chip.

Common band switch and universal meter shift switch are rotary switch, its structure has two kinds: one is BBM (Break Before Make) contact type, which is characterized in the transposition when the contact first disconnect the front contact And then connected to the rear contact, during which there is a break with the front and rear contacts are the state: the other is MBB (Make Before Break) contact type, which is characterized in the transposition when the contact has a contact with the front and rear contacts Then disconnect the front contact and keep in touch with the rear contact. In the circuit design should be based on circuit use and circuit safety to select the appropriate rotary switch.
In a range of conversion resistance value, and then there is a contact switch, which is the old TV and radio switch, now the fan is a few stalls, then the fan winding several sets of leads, by changing the coil The number of turns to change the speed, the principle and the potentiometer similar.
Rotary switch is a rotary handle to control the main contact off a switch. There are two kinds of rotary switch structure, namely, unipolar unit structure and multi-pole multi-bit structure. Unipolar unit rotary switch in the application often used with the rotary potentiometer, and multi-pole multi-bit rotary switch used for working state line switching.
Those are just my personal point of views. What is your idea ? Do you agree with my ideas ? Any of your ideas would be highly appreciated.
Ps: Excuse me if I was wrong in words or expressions as I am a green hand in electronic engineerings in rotary switches. I need continual learnings.
May someone would like to help ?
thanks in advance.
