Wire cut EDM

08/16/2007 3:11 PM

hi all

I was wondering is there a formula to calculate the machining time for a workpiece cut on a wire cutting machine similar to that for turning and milling

t= l / s*n

it is important for estimating the cost of machining.

If any body can help me, i would be grateful

thanks alot

We have an EDM machine at work and the wire feed rate is proportional to the finish that we are trying to get on the part. Plus we need to know the material that you are cutting as Stainless steel and carbide are different feed rates. Please advise what machine you are using or it's capacities. I will look up the information if you will supply the material, finish and thickness of the cut. Ric

Dear Sir

Good Morning!!

We would like to introduce ourself.

We are a manufactory of EDM WIRE & Zinc Coated Wire in Taiwan.

We would want to know whether you interested in our goods.

Our factory was established since 1988.

Now our company had 30 production lines and cashing machine.

We are an integrated manufacturer, controlling the entire wire manufacturing

process from cashing to final drawing.

So we think our price will be more compition than other company.

We also have a good quality.

We have some of OEM companies. Who come from JAPAN , EUROPE & USA.

If you interested in our goods. Please feel free to contact us.

( PS. We also sell big size. If you need it. Please contact us. )

Best Regards;

Dear RicinCinci

thanks alot, actually this machine is used to cut tool steel for sheet metal dies,

So i understod that if i know the feed rate which depends on the material and the surface finish, all I will do is to divide the length of the contour by the feed rate to get the time required for machining!

am i right?

Correct.

Also figure in the number of times that the system will recycle over the cut to make the finish.

Typically the EDM will make several passes with the wire tightning to make the finish and the final size needed. We have a program on our computer that will tell you the time of the run from the drawing made to make the part. Check your system and see if the run time is an option from the control pannel or the input program.

A lot of parameters are there for Wire cut EDM

Tool metal, Job metal, votage, current applied, Job RoughnessInsulating medium, temperature,

position,[flat,wall,ceiling], Job area , shape depth of cut, MRR

Please refer American Society of Metals Hand book

for a 25 mm thick hardened die steel plate, you can assume 1mm/min cutting speed for roughing, 0.8mm/min for finishing & 2-3 mm/min for providing relief. the speed is directly proportional to the thickness. this does not include set up time. i have found this formula quite accurate & you can save upto 10% time
