TVS Clamp Voltage

05/30/2017 2:34 PM

I am looking for a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) that has a breakdown voltage (Vbr) of around 500 volts but a Vc (clamping voltage) of only a few volts - similar to gas discharge tube transient suppressors. Does a TVS exist with these parameters?

Not that I am aware of, the voltage difference is just too great for this type of technology.

Have you considered an electronic crowbar circuit instead?

What's the application?

If you look in the References section of that Wiki piece, you'll see one of our very own members is mentioned: Winfield Hill.

His and Paul Horowitz' The Art of Electronics is one of the best electronics books on my shelf.

Wow, never made the connection. If I had been drinking my cup of tea it would be all over my screen now.

I have read my hard-bound second edition cover to cover and it resides within easy reach at work.

Yep, same guy. Got a haircut since he posed for my edition's photo (when he was at Sea Data Corp).

I bluddy drool when I look at his lab gear. Man could I have some fun with that!

He's got his own Wiki page too.
