Medium Voltage V/S Low Voltage Generator

05/30/2017 6:14 AM

Dear Forum Members,
Please help me to know the major differences between MV & LV generator with regards to generator construction, fuel consumption, operating characteristics, efficiency and others.
Thanks in advance

With what aim? After all, all this information is available using an internet search engine and a telephone.

If they’re doing the same work, there’s no difference.

What's the difference in those areas between a 100 KW three phase generator wired for 277 VAC delta and 480 VAC Wye?

Here's how I see it. If you are going to USE low voltage, then generate low voltage, otherwise you must then also add a transformer and the MV protection equipment for the primary side, which is an unnecessary expense.

If you are going to use a MIXTURE of low and medium voltage in your facility, then by all means generate medium voltage, because you are going to need a transformer no matter what.

You are misunderstanding the concept.

Voltage levels refer to the transmission lines. The longer the distance, the higher the voltage.

End of discussion.

Generators extract energy from different sources. Comparing fuel and wind efdiciency is pointless. Thermal to electrical energy conversion is way more inefficient than mechanical to electrical, but efficiency is not the key. Profits of the investment are.

MV generators are normally used above 1000 KW. As you know as the rating increases in LV current values will be high.It is easier to handle a higher voltage than higher current. There is no major difference except in insulation and protection.Fuel consumption is purely a engine related subject.Ultimately a cost to be seen vis a vis the cost of large size cables and bus bars in Switch board vs Cost of MV generator ,Protection and switch gear.as rating goes up it is difficult to get a circuit breaker with suitable fault level.Even in MV Voltage levels like 3.3,6.6 kv and 11 kv to be selected suitably .

Low Voltage ranges below 600 V whereas Medium Voltage ranges in
600 V to 69 kV.
