08/21/2007 4:07 AM

I have a problem with a USB 2.0 to DB9 converter,

We have a DSLAM Erickson, when I plug it on the serial interface of the DLSAM to the USB of my PC, I can't open a connection between my laptop and the DSLAM, I tried to connect it with a serial cable DB9 pin to pin and I tried many combinations but it's still not working.

I need your advice please.

The DSLAM is Alcatel 7302,

the pin out that i tried on the serial are the following:

and

and

still unable to open a connection between my PC and the DSLAM,

i am working on hyper terminal and on putty tried it with many USB to serial and on many PC.

Maybe a dumb question, but, did you install the drivers for your usb to serial converter? I think they are required for all OSs through XP at least. If so does you OS indicate that it is functional? If so check the pinouts for both your device and the converter, and if all this is ok get a scope and verify that all is well electrically, might be a bad converter. good luck. one reference: http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/s-21882319/cmd/kbresource/kb-8463574352309710011/!DOWNLOAD?entryid=157487&attachid=25967

thanks for the reply,

i tried my USB on a cisco router it worked perfectly (driver working perfectly)

always when i plug my USB cable i get it in the device manager with a com number when i change the USB slot it changes the com number so it's working,

about the cable it's working well i tested pin by pin with a scope.

if i can get the configuration on the USB to serial pins it will be great,

are those cables with a standard? or they can be different? i mean it's always the same configuration on the pins? and how i can check them? how can i make sure about the pins from the serial side of my usb to serial?

Thanks.

How old is this device your trying to commuicate with? Some devices require a direct(Physical) com port and not a usb(virtual port) for communication. See if your device supports USB communication. There are other options for laptop or desktop PCs is to purchase PCI serial interface card(DESKTOP) or PCMCIA(LAPTOP) serial interface card, may solve your problem.

Try to disable the FIFO feture on the port setting. And try using the lowest serial speed. If you can see the garbage then the problem on the serial speed.

Delta,

I think the question is not a valid one. Whenever I needed to use a serial to USB converter, I always had to load drivers, which accounted for the difference in electrical signals and told the USB port what to do with the crap (in the USB's perspective) it was receiving.

Is this not true?

There are some really bad USB to serial converters out there. You may have a dud. I had a client show up with a bad one last year. It took hours to satisfy him that it was his crummy converter and not our code.

I'd try a different brand converter. I don't know what a good one is though. It seems to be a combination of how the laptop is set up to use the peripheral hardware and the converter drivers.

Personally, I avoid the things like the plague, so I'll have to ask the other posters if they know what works with your laptop. Who's laptop are you using?

there is a competetive company who got the same hardware (DSLAM Alcatel) they are using the same way (USB to serial and a serial cable with a special pinout)

i tried my USB to Serial and my PC on there Serial DB9 Cable and i was able to access my own DSLAM so my PC, my driver, my USB to serial, my DSLAM all are working it's just the cable between my USB to Serial and the DSLAM, so it's the Serial cable pin out, they refused to give me the configuration.

Thanks in advanced.
