Stress Relief Requirement in Pressure Vessels

08/21/2007 11:39 AM

Hi all,

I just want to find out instances in the design of a pressure vessel where stress relief requirements will be specified and also the parameters or factors to consider before requesting for stress relief on the data sheets.

Hi Yinka,

If your looking for the rules how to design than look into ASME Pressure Vessel code Part VIII. This is if you have to built according the American standards. But that is very expensive. More cheaper and also a good code is the European VDI code 2000. You can find all this at the specialized editors or on the internet.

If you want it to be calculated for you, then go to a vessel manufacturer. Specify the code and ask for an offer including the basic design. When you stay within the bidders standard range, you can have relative cost efficient solutions.

Also, do not forget that the material price is going to be your real cost, not the engineering.

PWHT (stress relieving) is called on for thickness, for service, or for material. CS less than 3/4" does not require SR except for service. Service being H2S, any number of acids. Your basic chromes p11 (1 1/4), P5A, P5Bs, and codes.

Give more information and you will get a better answer.

Yinka,

Pressure vessel design & fabrication engineers starts from bottom of experience. this is not a 1-day seminar to know the basic. If you read the book of pressure vessel code, you cant understand unless you are on the field of work for its application.

This field of expertise is a bread and butter of an engineer. This is a business in the industry of petrochem, oil & gas sector. nobody will feed you the info from A - Z knowledge. You can not download a pressure vessel book from the internet as well.

Take an experience to let you learn the basic of pressure vessel codes & standards.

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, Section VIII, Division 1:

1. For carbon and low alloy steel vessels : Para. UCS-56 "Requirements for Post Weld Heat Treatment", and Table UCS-56.

2. For high alloy steel vessels: Para. UHA-32 "Requirements for Post Weld Heat Treatment", and Table UHA-32.

PWHT = Post Weld Heat Treatment
