Google Sky

08/23/2007 3:56 PM

Google is going to create Google Sky, which will be a map of the stars. I guess you'll be able to view the night sky and zoom in on areas of interest. There is a ton of data out there, basically Google has volunteered to organize it and put it on the web.

I've been waiting for this for years. I have so much respect for Google for making this dream that I'm sure a lot of us share a reality. To be able to zoom in and view hubble images and zoom out and see the location in the night sky, I mean, wow. I'm really excited about this. Nice job Google.

Wow, at last, constellation sized adertising banners! Watch those marketing dudes melt in ecstasy.

No, I can see great fascination in the result.

I downloaded the latest Google Earth update earlier this week and it now has the option of Sky View. So, it's already out there.

I only had a short play with it so I can't review it in any detail, but it certainly has great potential.

I downloaded it.

I really like that you can get the distances in light years of the stars and their magnitudes. I wasn't blown away by their zoom feature, I hope google sky does a better job with that part of it. Still, not bad. I thought the whole "see it from another planets perspective was cool, but they blew it cause they made the sun the same size in the sky on every planet, which is way off. I know I'm being overly critical of the software, but its only because I have been waiting for someone to get one of these programs right for a while now. Hopefully google. Thanks for the heads up.
