Oil for Sump Pump Motor Cavity?

08/30/2007 11:06 AM

Anyone know the type of oil in the motor cavity of a 1/2 sump pump. I have replaced the gasket and am ready to put it together again but cannot find information on the type of oil. Some oil was lost at time of the repair. The closes information I can find is to use 32 VSI Turbine oil ?

(from Liberty Pumps FAQ page - http://www.libertypumps.com/faqs.asp#18):

..."in the case of a significant repair where oil has been lost, the pump oil should be replaced with ISO30 turbine oil (which can be purchased through most motor repair shops). As an alternative, synthetic 5W30 motor oil may be used. The amount of oil in the unit should be just enough to cover the motor windings, however, there should be enough room left in the pump casing to allow for expansion when the oil heats up."

Does this type oil apply to 120Volt submersible electric motors also?

I lost all oil when I opened the case for a rebuild.

The web link you reference is talking about 12 volt dc battery backup pumps.
