Wanted: Part to Vent Hot Air Between Glass of IGUs

08/31/2007 1:28 PM

Hi all, I am not sure what name the product I am looking for goes by so I'll try to describe it. It's about the size of a quarter is vinyl and is used to vent hot air from between the glass of IGU's. It has a peel and stick backing, it acts as a one way vent or valve. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

All the insulated glass units I have seen are sealed. There is only one reason I know of to vent a IGU. Thats for shipping if the glass will be changing altitude.

All the vents I have seen are small tubes sealed into the butyl rubber between the panes of glass. They are some times sealed over when the IGU reaches the location.

Thanks for the post.. but this is a new system for repairing units that have failed and is now in use to clear the condensation from between the glass.

For sealing a rebuilt unit that you are driving he moisture out with heat. A pice of tape with a heat activated adhesive on part of its surface should do.

On an an area inside the outer rim of tape disk have a adhesive that hold the valve in place after the unit is assembled and before it is heated. That adhesive should loose most of its strength when heated and be narrower in one spot than the rest of the circumference.

When the widow is heated the thin point in the adhesive fails letting air and moisture escape. At the end of the heating cycle the the temperature is raised to the point the second adhesive is activate and as the window cools the vacuum it draws seal the tape. It would work best if the heat activate adhesive started to stick at the outer edge first so the vacuum would pull down the whole patch and not need to be pressed down to make sure its all stuck to the glass at the end of the cycle.

Considering the price of fuel I would look a flushing the windows with dry air, nitrogen or helium using two or more hypodermic needles though the fist seal and putting a second layer of sealan over it. The cost might be lower.

In the case of Helium I doubt it ever pays out from an insulation point of view in dual pain window but it is a good selling point in today's green market.

Thank you for you thoughtful reply, but the part I am looking for is already in use and once applied to the glass no gas is needed to insulate the unit
