Tough Seal Needed

08/31/2007 1:00 PM

Does anyone know a company that can provide us with a seal that goes on a 2" spinning shaft that can withstand high temperatures, like inside a gasoline engine cylinder, high wear resistance with little to no lubrication, and resistive to corrosive chemicals?

Thanks in advance!

If a mechanical seal won't work, investigate a magnetic coupling.

I don't find reasons to oppose mechanical seal for this application. They work at much harsh situations than this.

2" spinning shaft: is very standard size.

High temperatures: How much? 800 C, no big deal for mechanical seal.

High wear resistance with little to no lubrication: If this is for crank shaft entering into crankcase, the 'flash lubrication' should be good enough. Besides there are mechanical seals running in bone dry situations (dry gas seals).

Corrosive chemicals: Around the engine, where comes the corrosive chemicals. Inside crankcase should be oil/oil mist and outside should be ambient (may carry corrosive mist in ppm level?).

I believe, for this application a 'low key mechanical seal' should be good enough.

When retrofitting the existing sealing arrangement the following points are worthwhile to consider, more so for an old machine.

Since this is 'reciprocating equipment' vibration levels and the 'axial float' are the objectionable factors for a successful mechanical seal.

I read the title and immediately thought of a big butch seal from the north sea...

I must stop drinking this early...

Good morning Mailman,

I worked in the Ceramics Industries for many years and saw all kinds of things made of ceramics with whatever properties were needed achieved by changing binders and /or glazes. With the right binders and glazes something can withstand extremely high temperatures, pressures and have extreme wear characteristics.

It is possible to make something that is indistructable. We created internal engine parts like pistons, rings, valves, connecting rods, gears, etc. for the big 3 auto makers(GM, Ford, Chrysler). Each scrapped the projects because the engines would not wear out.

Type "Ceramtec North America" into your search engine and follow the links to Laurens, SC. They can probably create anything you need by forming the part, machining the "greenware" ,glazing and then firing an exact part for you.

Contact me if you need to through the forum and I can find numbers for you to call.
