How Animals Think

04/18/2005 10:32 AM

If anyone gets Discover magazine, there was an interesting article this month about an Autistic woman who helps design "humane" systems for slaughtering cattle. Humane in the sense that fear is minimized for the animals. The idea is that an autistic person is better equipped to understand how an animal thinks and will notice important stimuli overlooked by "normal" people. I think there are some insights into how the human brain works, and some of its strengths and weaknesses. Here is a link to a preview of the article, unfortunately you have to pay to see the complete version.

Interview with Temple Grandin

04/18/2005 2:49 PM

I heard part of an interview with Temple Grandin on National Public Radio back in January. Her triumph over autism is truly heroic. If anyone is looking for a broader understanding of her experience, here's a link to the interview.

I listened to the interview. Temple really is a remarkable woman. Clearly highly functional, but her autistic insights are valuable and refreshing. A lot of what she says seems to have a ring of truth to it. I'm stunned by how lucid she is, especially in her ability to answer complicated questions.
