What size Stepper motor do I require for a CNC Foam Cutter

09/06/2007 6:48 AM

I am a stucco trim manufacturer and in the process of building a CNC foam cutter. I intend on using foam blocks 48 x 36 x 96 inches and wondering how to determine what size stepper motors to use on a 4 axis machine? I also need to no what software is recommended.

I don't know myself but the guys over at RCGroups.com are always talking about it. There are a lot of forums, you might check the 'composites forum, or my favorite, 'Slope' in the 'Sailplanes area'. Some of these guys are cnc cutting and selling foam airframe components.

it depends on your torque and speed and precision etc.

I think small power can do for foam cutter. for example,

42BYGH107 4phs 12V 0.28Nm.

There is an application story on www.motioncontrol.com that might help you understand some of the potential complexities of your application; blade orientation, flexible motion control software, PCIbus motion controller card, host pc, multile servo motors, HMI, Visual Basic screens, subsystems, rack and pinion cutting surface,... It can be found at: http://www.motioncontrol.com/newproducts/detail.cfm?id=1245 . Good luck.

the people over at www.cnczone.com also might be of some use in figuring out what you need.

some cheap and easy to setup/use control software to look into would be Mach3 www.artsoftcontrols.com. It has a huge user base, with many very talented people & programmers contributing custom code for a variety of applications. There is also a user forum there that can almost certainly help you out as well.

good luck!
