Looking for a M38x1 tap

09/06/2007 4:35 AM

Can somebody tell me where to find a tap to create a M38x1 thread?

I've never heard of one... can't you use a lathe to cut the thread?

John.

Thanks John,

The problem is that the part is too big to be swung on the lathe we have, so we wanted to use a tap on our milling machine,

This size is not a comon standard. Can you give some more specs on the part? How big is it. What material? How deep? Do you have a mating part or a gage to check the threaded hole. How many holes? For just a few holes I can often thread mill a hole for less than the cost of a cusotm tap and leave a better finish.

I have a source for custom taps, but I will have to dig for it.

Hello and thanks for your views. Yes, we did suspect that it is not a standard, so if you can did out the info on custom made taps it would be great.

Have a great weekend,

Hans

38x1 - to me, that sounds rather like some older imperial thread, e.g 1.5" CEI, which would be similar to "M" 38.1 x 1.058. See http://www.gewinde-normen.de/en/cei-thread.html . If the thread in question belongs to a bicycle (e.g. bottom bracket) or british pre-60es motorcycle, this is quite probable. - HTH Ulrich

Thanks for your suggestion, but 38.1x1.058 will not work. There are mating parts with an outside M38x1 thread which we have no problem making on a lathe.

Best regards and have a good weekend,

Hans

No, we are looking for a M38x1. In fact a few years ago we did use the M38x1.5 but this was replaced for various reasons. Is there maybe an ultra-fine. If so can you direct us furher?

Thanks and have a great weekend

Thread milling tool. Single pass, perfect thread no burrs on thread, completely adjustable to .0002 on the daimeter.

Just to be clear:

I was making a suggestion as opposed to asking a question. More accuratley, I was asking if it was feasible in this app.

We may be able to supply that tap for you but we would have to have it quoted as a special. Delivery would be a few days. How many will you need and do you want plug or bottoming style?

Yes we can supply your tap, but need to know the following: is the hole a thru hole or is it bottoming. The type of material and hardness, and the type of machine you are using. Also the number of holes you will be tapping.

Easy...

Gently aneal a pice of hardened tool steed to app. 35 R. hardness. Old broken 35 mm shank drill will do.

Put a bit of taper in front. Cut an oversized keyway to app. 1/4 of a diameter. Then gently cut the thread using carbide tools or grind the thread. Make it slightly oversized.

This improvised tap is good enough to cut several thread!
