Concentration of NH+ species in a gas mixture

Dear All,

I have a vacuum vessel operating at low pressure, 1.0mbar to 10.00mbar, filled with very small quantities of hydrogen and nitrogen, under glow discharge conditions. I need to measure only the NH+ species in a mix of various other species present.

As the atomic mass spectrometers cost a small fortune, any ideas for a really inexpensive solution?

Are you sure that you want to measure the exact species NH+ ? I would suspect that the plasma would produce other species as well, such as NH4+.

Do you want to measure only NH+ ? This would likely only exist in very small quantities near the plasma.

Or, are you really trying to determine how much ammonia (NH3) is produced by the plasma?

Use a grating and a photon detector in the path of the NH+ ion emission line. This will take some setup and calibration and may need to be shielded from incident light.

Each ion will decay state by state to ground state and give off a characteristic line.

Spectral lines will be in vacuum ultraviolet region above 5.6eV to 10eV range.
