Clutch/Brake Press Controllers

02/14/2018 9:56 AM

Does anyone have experience buying, selling, or installing resolver or encoder based clutch/brake press controllers like a Wintriss WPC or Toledo's Press Pilot?

Would authorized installation shift any liability to the control manufacturer? I have a much more senior colleague insisting we have the maker install the equipment, believing that would release us from liability in the event of an accidental injury. It would add much cost to the project, but would obviously be well worth it if he is, in deed, correct. But I'm not so sure he is. I have a hard time believing anyone else could be held responsible for the safe operation of our machine.

This is a commercial matter, not an Engineering one.

  • If the manufacturer installs and commissions the equipment as part of a lump-sum package then any difficulties with the equipment fall entirely within the manufacturer's scope, and there is a price to pay for that.
  • If installation and commissioning is by others, then others take on the commercial consequences of that, including any payment issues, and the equipment manufacturer stands back having provided it.

There are a range of possibilities for supply and delivery too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incoterms.

And that's why larger organisations have a team of Buyers to make sure these things are nailed down in the contractual arrangements between the parties.

Yes you should always have the supplier install the parts when possible, and have the operator follow recommended safety procedures and be properly trained to operate the machine, these should all be properly documented, and they all work to decrease liability burden....
