Need for Switching Station

02/17/2018 9:07 AM

Dear Sir,

In a power system, normally there are generating station, primary transmitting substation, secondary transmission substation, primary distribution substation and secondary distribution station.

What is the need for switching station and where is it to be located?

Regards,

How do you turn ON your lights?

On second thought, this is such a fundamental question in power distribution all I should say is you are not qualified to enter the field of power distribution.

Now there's a perfectly legitimate reason for anonymous posting..

Something may go terribly wrong and the shorter the paper trail the better.

I doubt the OP is anyone but Gutmon or some such missing person trying to shake things up. The question can't possibly come from someone with an ounce of electrical engineering knowledge.

It is all about money. As in money saved in infrastructure costs. The basic idea is to have the shortest wire possible with all other considerations also taken into account. Getting in touch with an outside salesman from ABB or Siemens or General Electric will result in more information than you can ever use.

Generally speaking, a high voltage switching station does not involve any voltage change (although it may be in a switchyard adjacent to transformers). Instead, the switching is done between same voltage circuits to allow reconfiguring the circuits for the purpose of maintenance or to provide an alternate route in the event of a line failure.

The question isn't trivial, and might have been asked by a student or someone new to the power industry.

I'm sorry my terse response offended you. You should know by now that I readily support and answer even the most basic question a professed student asks. My opening socratic reply was intended to inspire a student to think in the correct frame of mind to help them solve their own question. I don't like to spoon feed an answer to somebody too lazy to look up their answer. I then wondered if they had looked up their question but were incapable of comprehending the answer they found.

None was taken, nor was any intended! It did seem odd that he was confused, so I searched the term and discovered that the answers were too vague or generic to be of use, so I gave him the power industry's general usage.

btw- does BSTS or Building 120 ring a bell with you?

Across the street from the abandoned HFBR (High Flux Beam Reactor). ESH & Q (Environmental Safety, Health & Quality) occupy that building now. I vaguely remember the acronym for BSTS but can not remember it.

On another note, I am mildly disappointed my GA for this thread has been completely cancelled. Inspiring a student to think was my goal. Embarrassing anyone too lazy to look up the answer, as you did, was my rant. Then again I'm still waiting for my CR4 coffee mug for 500 GA anyways.
